OPERON was founded in 1973 as an R&D laboratory, focused on the field of immunochemistry. Initially, the objective of the company was to satisfy the needs of the Spanish market. However, three years later, the strategy changed and OPERON started to focus on the international market.
Our main product lines are:
1973
In December 1973, a plot of land of 2,500 square metres was acquired, which was soon extended to approximately 3,500 square metres. A first building of about 200 square metres was built, 2/3 of which was allocated to the animal house, where 500 rabbits and 1 goat were kept for the development of polyclonal antibodies. The remaining part was allocated to a laboratory, 25% of which was occupied by a cold store.
In 1976 the first antisera were produced and the first export of products took place.
1984
In 1984, the first part of the current building was completed. At that time, there were 6 employees working at OPERON and the company was already exporting latex agglutination products for pregnancy and hepatitis B detection.
1990
Later, in 1990, the first monoclonal antibodies began to be manufactured, which was the start of the raw material line. After two years, the rapid test line was initiated with the product Simple hCG, which detects the hormone chorionic gonadotropin, also known as the pregnancy hormone.
1996
In 1996, the first extension of the building was completed, which grew from about 700 square metres to a total of 2,000 square metres. During this year, the company’s first bioreactor was also installed, allowing it to increase the production of raw materials. In fact, from 1999, products began to be manufactured for third-party companies and the first FDA-approved product was obtained.
2006
In 2006, the second and last extension of the building was completed. The total built-up area was now 4,000 square metres including laboratories, production plant, warehouses, offices and an underground garage. The molecular biology and ELISA lines were also inaugurated, and record sales were achieved with the innovative cGMP test, which is able to detect fraud in milk.
2012
This continuous and sustainable growth allowed OPERON to receive the Export Award from the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce in 2012, after reaching 91% of exports.
