The new SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) has been recently declared a Variant of Concern due to a series of important mutations in the viral spike protein and especially in the receptor-binding domain.
To avoid PCR assay failure, highly conserved sites were chosen as PCR targets in our PCR kits, besides the use of multiple PCR targets within a single assay to compensate for possible single target failures.
Moreover, the studies performed to evaluate the potential impact of the emergent variants with our PCR tests to detect SARS-CoV-2 (Real SARS-CoV-1/2, Real SARS-CoV-2 and Real SARS-CoV-2 plus kits) confirm that they are not affected by the mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the new Omicron one. This is an advantage over other tests that might provide a negative result when analyzing a sample of a patient infected with the new variants.
Thus, the reliability and excellent performance of our PCR tests to detect SARS-CoV-2 are maintained, being able to detect all the new variants of the causing agent of COVID-19, and thus continiuing to help to fight against this pandemic cause by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
