Immunochromatography tests, commonly referred to as rapid tests, are based on the immunological capture of nanoparticles conjugated to specific antibodies (or antigens) during their passage through a membrane, on which specific antibodies (or antigens) have also been immobilised.
It is a perfect technique to be performed in point-of-care facilities, as its speed (time to results is only a few minutes) and simplicity (no equipment or trained personnel are required) allow the patient to leave the clinic with an indication of where the diagnosis may be directed.
In addition, rapid tests are a very helpful tool to verify the need for tests that can be not only invasive for the patient, but also very costly for the health system. In this way, and in a very short time, the specialist can have a guide to help in the diagnosis, for a better and timely management of the patient, avoiding prescribing medication or invasive tests in those cases where it is not necessary.
