One-step immunochromatographic test for the detection of total prostate-specific antigen (t-PSA) in human serum.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, causing an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018, or one in six deaths. Of these, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men along with lung and colorectal cancer, accounting for 43% of all diagnoses by 2020 according to NCI data.

The European Association of Urology guidelines recommend a risk-based strategy for prostate cancer screening based on first level PSA and age. PSA has been shown to be useful in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer and in this respect is superior to other tests such as rectal examinations and transrectal ultrasonography. In addition, both the progression of untreated prostate cancer at different stages and the response to therapy can be monitored with PSA.

The Simple/Stick PSA test offers an effective and rapid aid in detecting abnormally high levels of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

Can a false positive result be obtained?

The specificity of the test is very good, but occasionally a false positive result may occur. Consequently, as a general rule, all positive samples should be confirmed with another equally or more sensitive method.

What types of samples can be used?

Fresh and free of turbidity sera.

How long and under what conditions can sera be stored?

Serum samples can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or frozen (-20 ºC) for longer periods of time.

Is it important to control the reaction time?

Yes, if the reaction time is less than 5 minutes, samples that have an amount of analyte close to the detection limit of the test will not be detected. If the reaction time is longer than 5 minutes, the sensitivity of the test will be altered and may lead to misinterpretation.

What does a positive test result mean?

The final diagnosis should not be based on the test result. It should be based on the correlation of the test results with the clinical evaluation of the patient and with other diagnostic procedures. Thus, some patients suffering from prostate cancer may show serum PSA values lower than 4 ng/ml and other healthy individuals may show values higher than 4 ng/ml.
