S. PNEUMOSTRIP: A NEW COMPARATIVE STUDY AT THE DONOSTIA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SHOWS ITS POTENTIAL

A comparative study was carried out at Donostia University Hospital (Spain) to determine the capsular types of 50 pneumococcal clinical isolates using different molecular techniques, as the S. PneumoStrip product from Operon, and the Gold Standard method, the Quellung reaction.

The results indicate that the molecular techniques as the S. PneumoStrip identified the serotypes of all the 50 clinical isolates (100%); with the Quellung reaction 46/50 (92%) isolates were correctly serotyped. The quickest technique was the S. PneumoStrip, while the Quellung reaction was the slowest technique.

The S. Pneumostrip test is the only CE marked, commercially available molecular test that allows easily, quickly and simply the identification of 76 different serotypes of S. pneumoniae in DNA samples, extracted from bacterial cultures or from direct samples, allowing the detection of co-infections.

The combination of an S. pneumoniae molecular typing technique, as S. PneumoStrip, and the Quellung reaction as confirmation reference method is a highly precise and fast strategy for the serotyping of high number of pneumococcal clinical isolates.
